Family Jewels

I’ve spent this week working in San Francisco. The weather is fantastic, as is the food (although lack of delivery and long wait times at good take-out places can be annoying). But the view, well, that’s by far the best. This is what I see from my “office” in the Chinatown area.
If you click on the images you’ll get a larger version. I especially love how in picture #1 the man (yes, that’s a man’s underwear) managed to clip his socks on as well.

Rare style at the gift show

Uncategorized No Comments »

I don’t hate the gift show, but lately i find the offerings there a bit lacking. Mostly in originality or innovation. Oh, another owl? What a hoot! Yaaaaawn. More minimalist wood furnishings? Knock knock! Zzzzzzzzzzzz.
This show, however, I did make an incredible discovery. Not of product, but of two human beings who own a salon/store in Santa Fe. I forgot their names – forgive me – but who needs names when you have outfits like this? Was this what NYC was like in the 70s and 80s? When true originality walked the streets? I mourn for what I missed. But I celebrate their style and cojones. (What you aren’t seeing, to my MASSIVE regret, is the incredible pedicure on the all-in-white man. He had perfect feet, with Lily Pulitzer pink polish and a toe ring).

A peach grows in Chelsea

Food/Restaurants 1 Comment »

My mom noticed it first. She was standing on my balcony, looking down, and said “look, there’s a peach tree!” I am embarrassed to say that my first thought was that Mom must’ve forgotten her glasses. I mean, a peach tree? On 19th Street? I doubt it. But guess what? It’s true. I was reminded just the other day as I looked down upon almost-ripe, orangey yellow round things that are most definitely peaches. Organic, no less!
How did they get there? The girl who lives in the ground floor apartment has no idea – the tree has been there longer than she has. My guess is that someone was eating a peach, threw the pit over the balcony and it actually took. A couple shots are below. I’m thinking peach pie….

Gorbachev is into Leather?

Fashion No Comments »

It’s hard to describe the confusion I felt when flipping through the latest issue of either Vogue or Vanity Fair and coming upon a spread featuring Mikhail Gorbachev. But it’s not an editorial. It’s an ad for Louis Vuitton. The ex-President (and actually last leader) of the former Soviet Union is in an ad for Louis-friggin- Vuitton and – get this – it’s shot by Annie Leibovitz with the BERLIN WALL IN THE BACKGROUND. The ironies just keep coming!
Interestingly enough, there’s no info about it on Mikhail’s own snazzy flash website – (http://www.mikhailgorbachev.org/).

I *heart* this guy

Fashion 2 Comments »

Seen on 23rd Street, just west of 8th Avenue-
One very stylish couple, color coordinated. All very nice. But check out the guy’s jeans. Yep, those are red leather or leather-like hearts on his ass. Several of them. I was impressed – it takes a real man to wear his heart(s) on his ass, instead of the usual below-the-belt location.
Note the color coordination with the shirt, belt, shoes and (although you can’t see it in this picture) boxers. Loving!
