In today’s NY Times I had a teensy piece in the home section about a designer named Heath Nash and his fabulous lamps, made of recycled plastic. It’s that time of year again, when crowded Jitneys and various ferries figure more into our lives than usual. For many of us, any mode of transportation equals motion sickness. Thankfully, there is a solution beyond Dramamine. These Cherry Blossom bands adjust to hit the right pressure point to alleviate nausea and other symptoms. They’re also washable, waterproof, and a whole lot cuter than the drab gray alternatives out there.

It recently came to my attention that the FLDS people (think Texas “cult” where 400+ kids were removed from their parents/homes/compound and then returned) has their own website where you can BUY THE CLOTHING. That’s right, those dresses so reminiscent of Little House of the Prairie (sans floral print) can be purchased directly from the (I’m guessing) women who make them. Most of the items shown on their website — shirts, overalls, dresses, jeans, underwear, sleepwear — are, unfortunately, sized for babies, kids and teens, thereby squashing my halloween plans.

Tours of the glass house have been sold out for the summer for months. But I got a tip this morning that more tickets were going to be added, and they were. I don’t know how many but I do know that I just logged onto ovationtix.com and bought two tickets ($25 each) for next Friday the 18th.
They’ve added four tours:
Friday the 18th, 10 am and 11 am
Friday the 25th, 11 am and Noon.

Target’s latest collaboration is with one of my favorite people ever – John Derian. I wasn’t able to attend the press preview so I didn’t get to see or fondle these items personally (except the scrapbook, which they sent with the press kit and which was very nice – if you’re into that sort of thing). We’ll have to wait until fall to find out how the rest turns out. Here are some pics in the meantime:
Last night we decided to take a stroll by what was Florent to see if the space was indeed open as a restaurant. It was. And it was totally empty. I couldn’t help but take a photo. It just looked so eerie and had a morgue-like vibe.
As we stood outside looking in, semi-stunned, a guy (maybe the new manager?) started talking to us, telling us the restaurant is still open and that “everything is the same. Same people working, same menu.” We were like, dude, NOTHING IS THE SAME and p-s, you should change that menu back to whatever it was when it was R&L. Make it a basic diner. No Boudin Noir, please.
This same guy asked us if we thought people would come and seemed worried. Seems like he should be, no?
It has come to my attention that not everyone who reads this blog (and p-s, i was shocked that anyone other than my mother bothered) reads Best Bets on nymag.com, thereby missing some of my choicest pics. So, on occasion, I will duplicate them here. Today’s best bet is about Barefoot Wines. I’ve pasted the copy below but wanted to add that besides being super-cheap and tasting great, as a company Barefoot Wines does great things including beach clean-ups. I participated in one a few weekends ago in Montauk. It was cold. It was raining. But it was fun. And we got to hang with G. Love.

If you are into cheap good wines, then you’re likely a fan of Barefoot Wines. The label is known for very tasty bottles under $10, and now they’ve added three sparkling wines to their offerings. I’ve tried all of them and can confirm that they taste much more sophisticated than the price would imply, making them the perfect hostess gift for the season. And best of all, the bubbly costs less than what you’d pay for a glass in most establishments.

When I was in Cape Town last fall, I bought a pair of Fulani earrings at a great store called Africa Nova.
I didn’t know much about them, just thought they were a very cool new (to me) take on a hoop earring. I personally love hoops and tend to wear them all summer long; I figured these would be a great addition to my collection and at a very reasonable price (something like $22 for the large size).
In the past week I’ve seen several women wearing these same earrings. One was a very stylish woman from India (she liked the tribal look) the other your basic NYC fashion-obsessed girl rocking something nobody else did.
I predict you’ll be seeing a lot more of these on stylish ears all over town. Mine are brass but I’ve also seen them in silver. There’s one drawback – they’re a bit heavy.
I don’t know who sells them in town but if you google “fulani earrings” a lot of online vendors come up and the prices are very reasonable (ranging from $19.95 – $25, depending on size).
