The Moss/Donzella/R 20th Century warehouse sale

Chances are you’ve received the below ad via email blast.

I have a love/hate with ads like this – love the idea, hate the reality. So I did some digging to find out exactly WHAT sort of stuff will be there – here’s a teensy list, sans prices, of some of the stuff Moss is clearing out. There’s a lot more, this is just a taste….

There was a party at Selima Optique last night to showcase a collaboration between Brazilian eyewear company Evoke and a bunch of graffiti and other artists I’ve never heard of (Flip, Igor Cavalera, Shn, Asa, Gesto…you get the idea). Anyway, the party was very fun (Selima’s parties always are) and the works on display were kinda crazy but very cool:

See the Valentino movie

Immediately. I’m a documentary junkie – I’ll watch any documentary on almost any topic. Lagerfeld Confidential was…eh. But Valentino: The Last Emperor is beyond entertaining. Interestingly enough, the take-away is more about Valentino’s partner (in life and otherwise), the ridiculously sexy Giancarlo Giametti, than the man himself. See it yourself and you’ll understand. Below, a still from the movie, with my friend the adorable James Aguiar in the not-so-background:

Fashion Underfoot, Part 2

Design, Fashion, Uncategorized No Comments »

Six years ago, Diane Elson of Elson Company launched a collection in collaboration with the CFDA called “Fashion Underfoot.” She asked fashion designers to design rugs, which she then produced and sold, with 10% of proceeds benefiting Fashion Targets Breast Cancer. Next week she’ll introduce the second Fashion Underfoot collection, and a preview of some designs is below. They’re hand-knotted Tibetan carpets priced at $90/square foot, available through Elson Company 1 800 944 2858

AF1 as imagined by Hella Jongerius and Maharam

Design, Fashion No Comments »

You might’ve gotten the invite about the event next week at Moss that somehow involves the unlikely collaboration between Hella Jongerius, Maharam and Nike. Kind of hard for most of us to imagine. Thanks to MoCo Loco, we don’t have to. They posted these pictures yesterday of the Airforce 1 as imagined by Hell and Maharam. The shoe goes on sale at Moss on April 2.

While I am normally a fan of Ms. Jongerius I have to say this time, Hella no. I do predict that they’ll be very popular with what I call the “Moma donor” woman. You know the type – she lets her hair go grey, cuts it in a severe bob, and wears monochromatic Zoran outfits with one dramatic piece of jewelry (probably a neckalce) or, if she’s feeling demure, a pair Ted Muehling earrings. Regardless, she’ll no doubt be rockin these kicks very soon.

Studio Dror for Target

For those not totally over the Target designer collaborations, I present the latest, from Dror Benshetrit of Studio Dror. There’s bedding (which you’ll like if you’re into butterflies or birds), decorative home items (which are nice but, based on prior experience, end up looking much better in the pictures than in real life), and stationery – the strongest of the three groups.

Some pictures of the stationery items (hitting stores July 12) are below. But you can peruse the entire lookbook here.

The perfect beachy dress (that you might wear in the city, too)

Fashion, Uncategorized No Comments »

Old Navy just got their first summery shipment – lots of dresses, long and short, very well priced. I grabbed this one in both green and black versions – it’s gauzy with a built-in slip and I can attest it travels very well. I might be tempted to wear the black one in the city this summer. Cost: $24.50 — buy them both here.

A great hair day

Also courtesy of a trip to Barbados. This photo was taken at a Polo match. Please note the combination of clips plus scrunchy, and that the scrunchy matches the dress, AND (you can’t see this) that her lipstick also perfectly – and i mean PERFECTLY – matches scrunchy/dress. The matchy matchy lipstick-clothing thing seems to be a trend here amongst women of a certain age. This elegant woman is easily in her 70s. I won’t even go into the hairclip thing.

Potty training

One of the many things I love about my work is that I learn new things all the time, thereby making me a fountain of useless information.
Here’s my latest discovery (and I acknowledge I am late to this one, but perhaps I’m not the only one), courtesy of a trip to Barbados.

This is the quaintly old-school bathroom at some historic site I am now forgetting the name of -

Turns out the fixtures are by an age-old English company called:

You read that correctly:

This clearly required more research. Here is what I unearthed on the company’s website:

“It is popularly thought that Mr. Crapper invented the W.C., and that the vulgar word for faeces is a derivative of his name, but neither belief is true. However, etymologists attest that the Amercian word, “crapper”, meaning the W.C. is directly from his name. He relentlessly promoted sanitary fittings to a somewhat dirty and sceptical world and championed the ‘water-waste-preventing cistern syphon’ in particular.”

A solar-paneled bird house

Design No Comments »

According to the designers:
Why would only humans make use of eco-friendly technology? Studio OOOMS designed a birdhouse with a solar panel on it’s roof. During the day sunlight feeds the solar panel, charging a small battery inside. At twilight the transparent stick will light up and cast a tiny light on your garden.
This light attracts an easy nighttime snack for the bird; all she has to do is stick her beak out of the hole and wait for the buzz.
Cost about 70 euros, at Studio Oooms.
